All, my research team has finally released the Kinect-based scanning software to complete the scanning/rigging/simulation workflow (although the Structure Sensor does a much nicer job with the scanning part).
This workflow allows you to:
1) Scan a human figure ( using a Kinect, like this: http://smartbody.ict.usc.edu/fast-avatar-capture-software-download)
2) automatically rig the 3D model (as posted above, http://smartbody.ict.usc.edu/autoriggerandreshaper)
3) Drag-and-drop into an animation system, attach a set of behaviors, and control the 3D character (our animation system SmartBody, shown here: https://youtu.be/sZDIB83VE6s
and downloadable here: http://smartbody.ict.usc.edu/).
Substituting the Structure Sensor for the Kinect in part (1) gives a better result than our scanning software, although our method allows a single person to be scanned without assistance,
Hope it's useful for the greater 3D community as we all try to figure out what to do/how to use all this data.
